I read Skip Moen’s post today and it really struck me that I don’t really “get” God. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t expect to understand all of who God is and what He does, but I think I make Him smaller than He is. I think He’s bigger and more powerful than I’ve ever thought, and I wish I could truly understand/grasp that. The problem is that so often I read about the amazing things He did in the Bible, but those things are stories, just stories, to me. Yes, I know that He actually did them and that they are a reflection of His greatness, but they’re written on paper and seem so distant. Just stories. And since our world isn’t saturated in the belief in and worship of gods and goddesses (not obviously, at least), the reality of God is that much more difficult to comprehend. So, I’m looking at the I AM statements of God today.
Exodus 6:6 ”Say, therefore, to the sons of Israel, ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage. I will also redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments.” (He is the deliverer from burdens and bondage. He redeems me from slavery. I wonder what the expression means “with an outstretched arm”?)
Exodus 16:12 “I have heard the grumblings of the sons of Israel; speak to them, saying, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; and you shall know that I am the LORD your God.’” (He hears out words, and He satisfies our needs and sometimes even our desires)
Exodus 31:13 “But as for you, speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘You shall surely observe My sabbaths; for this is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the LORD who sanctifies you. (He sanctifies me – makes me holy and set apart, free from sin, and pure before Him)

i Kings 20:28 Then a man of God came near and spoke to the king of Israel and said, “Thus says the LORD, ‘Because the Arameans have said, “The LORD is a god of the mountains, but He is not a god of the valleys,” therefore I will give all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the LORD.’” (He is a winner of battles who defies the boundaries we place on Him)
